A common mistake, that budding bloggers make, is that they try to promote their blog form day one! Their blog might have only a handful of posts but they promote them in the hope of getting massive traffic! This can have a serious negative impact on their blog and contrary to what is believed, you should keep your new blog a secret!
So why should you keep your blog a secret? due to the following reasons!
Bad SEO: More than great content, the success of a blog is measured by the traffic it receives and SEO (Search Engine Optimization ) plays a major role in it! If you are publicizing a new blog with less content, search engine bots would crawl your site and seeing that you have less content, they rank you accordingly. The result is a site which fails to get indexed or is indexed for a very low rank.
Loss of loyal traffic: When you let the world know about your new blog, people would visit your site. And they would leave when they find that you do not have enough compelling content. So people, who would have become your loyal readers, are turned off because of less quality content.
Content Theft: More than popular blogs, content snatchers focus on new and upcoming blogs. simply because they offer good content and they have low search engine rankings. The content you diligently worked for,as a result, gets stolen and appear on relatively high ranking pages with no credit given to you!
Also since the content snatchers have higher page ranks, your site gets penalized for duplicate content!
So unless you want your new blog to be a total failure, you should keep your blog a secret. Create a coming soon page for your blog, use plugins to prevent search engines indexing your page, focus on creating quality articles and once you reach about 10 to 20 articles, you could remove the lock-down on your blog and reap the rewards.
